Known Issues

New in Version 3.2:

  • Navigation Features: Right (and Left) Swipes for Custom Gestures are extended to scroll to the next (or previous) chapter if already at the bottom (or top) of the webview. A Single Tap in the Webview toggles the view size to show or cover the tab bar. Single Tap feature is only for iPad and iPhone 3GS and above; it can be disabled in Settings > General.
  • Veritas Tab: Abandonment to Divine Providence and The Cloud of Unknowing have been added to the Veritas > Spiritual. The listing of Popes can now be accessed in Veritas > Papal. The duplicate text for St. Jean Marie Vianney and the Council of Trent has been cleaned up; the Raccolta now correctly displays sections 122-130.
  • Calendar Tab: Solemnities that fall on Sunday in the Novus Ordo now display the correct readings; some minor fixes.
  • Prayer Tab: Added: Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary after Mass; the Transfige (St. Bonaventure); and the latin versions of the Anima Christ and the Litany of the Precious Blood.
  • Text: Font choices increased to 10. Color choices decreased to 12; however more color choices (about 70) are accessible by enabling "More Colors" in Settings > General. Font size now includes 13. Margins added to text on the iPad.
  • Searching: The very first and the very last search result can now properly access the whole chapter.
  • Optional Audio: Added Mark Ch. 12-14; Luke Ch. 1-7 (See www.ipieta.com for directions)
  • Other: Labels in table cells containing audio buttons are correctly formatted to better show table indexes.

Bible:

Catholic Bibles in the public domain with excellent English-Latin correspondence: Douay-Rheims, Latin Vulgate.

Scripture can read as English, Latin, or in English-Latin. The latter mode can displayed either as side-by-side or verse-by-verse. Chapters are easily accessed with the indexed tables. The entire chapter is displayed.

The Douay-Rheims is the only public-domain English Catholic Bible we are aware of. It is an excellent and truly Catholic translation, although some people may not prefer the "old English' style. We are hopeful that the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops (for the NAB version) and the National Council of Churches (for the RSV-CE version) will delight in the extensive corpus of doctrine which we make available for a minimum fee ($3) and will grant us permission to incorporate these translations.

Calendar:

Either the Ordinary (or Novus Ordo) Calendar or the Extraordinary (or Traditional or Tridentine) Calendar can be displayed. Toggle between calendars by shaking the device. The default calendar type can be set to Novus Ordo or to Tridentine or to "Last Type". The latter setting remembers which calendar was used last and applies that setting.

The Novus Ordo Calendar can be displayed in table format for Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, Scotland, the United States, or Wales. (The default can be set in the "Settings" Tab.)

Calendar Colors and Fonts:

  • BOLD UPPER-CASE: Solemnity (Class I)
  • Bold: Feast (Class II)
  • Regular: Memorial (Class III)
  • Italics: Optional Memorial (Class IV)
  • Red Color: Martyr, Mass of Holy Spirit, etc.
  • Blue Color: Liturgical “white” (e.g., non-martyr)
  • Green / Gold / Violet date / weekday backgrounds colors to distinguish the liturgical season
    • The Traditional Calendar has three shades of violet to distinguish Septuagessima, Lent, and Passiontide

Tapping the row for a given day will display that day's Gospel or first reading. Touching the "Other" button (or doing the appropriate swipe) will display the other reading(s) for the day.

Calendar defaults (Settings Tab) include: Default Text (Gospel or 1st Reading), Number of Months to Show (2-12), Calendar Type (Novus Ordo, Tridentine, or Last Type), and National Calendar (for Novus Ordo only).

The Calendar is complex; if there are any errors, especially regarding any omissions in the National Calendars, please inform us by direct email.

  • Custom Menu accessible by the Maltese Cross button. Custom Gestures are now optional (Settings > General).
  • Calendar: Novus Ordo and Traditional Calendars can be toggled by the right button in Calendar table; traditional calendar titles now display correctly for Eastertide.
  • Bible: Many typos corrected for the Douay-Rheims Bible. The previous Vulgate (Stuttgart version) was replaced with the Clementine Vulgate.
  • Veritas: Haydock Commentary repaired; Catena Aurea added for the gospels of St. John and St. Luke.

Version 2.3:

  • Simplified and enhanced navigation
    • The web views have simplified gestures as described below which facilitate standard web view scrolling and copying for the entire view
  • Taps:
    • Double-tab the web view to open up the menu for creating bookmarks, playing or controlling audio (if the audio exists), emailing the text, or opening corresponding text from the Bible, Haydock's commentary, or the Catena Aurea.
    • Multiple-tab (> 3 taps) the upper (or lower) half of the web view to increase (or decrease) the font size by increments of the number of taps minus 2.
  • Right/Left Swipe-tap:
    • If the "right button" (i.e., for the Mass readings and some prayers), these swipes change the reading. Otherwise, the swipes scroll the text down (or up) by one page with animation so not lose your place. (A slight pause can substitute as a tap at the end of the swipe.)
    • Reversed Swipe-tap: Reverse the horizontal swipe and iPieta scrolls the Text to the location corresponding to the position in the web view. (See the Read Me file.)
  • Start Up: Faster app start up. Start Up options [Settings > General > Start Up Mode]: 1) Bible tab, 2) Calendar tab, 3) Prayer tab, 4) Veritas tab; 5) Bookmarks, or 6) Last View

Version 2.2:

  • Bookmarks can be set for any text file or table entries with audio from the first 4 tabs (Bible, Calendar, Prayers, and Veritas). Hundreds of bookmarks can be easily accessed since they are automatically organized into an indexed table which corresponds in order to the primary sections of the 4 tabs.
  • Bookmark features: Audio can be played directly from the bookmarks; bookmarks remember position within the text; bookmarks are color-coded to indicate if they correspond to a table entry or to a text file from a particular tab; bookmarks can be easily deleted or rearranged (within its own section).
  • Bookmarks are added by double-tapping in the lefthand zone (as described in Read Me in the Help section). A menu pops up so you can add a bookmark or replace a bookmark if iPieta discerns a candidate bookmark that you may want to replace.
  • Bible Tab: The Bible is now ordered conventionally rather than starting with the Gospels.
  • Calendar Tab: Default options to "shift" Epiphany, Ascension, and/or Corpus Christi to Sunday. This option can be applied uniquely to each national calendar. Calendar mistakes were also corrected. The calendar readings can immediately access the entire corresponding chapter using the menu accessed by double-tapping as described above.
  •  Prayer Tab: Additions include prayers to St. Padre Pio and prayer for priests.
  • Veritas Tab: Additional works include the writings of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, "On the Love of God" (St. Francis de Sales), The Mystical City of God (Ven. Louis of Granada), the Haydock Biblical Commentary, and two books of the Catena Aurea by St. Thomas Aquinas (those on the gospels of St. Matthew and St. Mark).
  • The Haydock Biblical Commentary, the Catena Aurea, the Bible, and the Calendar Readings can access each other directly from the menu opened by double-tapping in the left hand 75 pixels as described in Read Me. So while reading a particular passage in Scripture, you can immediately open the corresponding passages in the commentaries and vice-versa. This navigation feature also applies to the search results for the Bible or the commentaries.
  • Audio has been expanded in both content and capacity: Ineffabilis Deus (Immaculate Conception) and Ad Caeli Reginam (Queenship of B.V. Mary) are in audio as well as many latin prayers. Default audio can be set to either English or Latin; double-tapping the audio icon tries to play audio with the default language; opening the audio menu gives the option to play the audio in either the Latin or the English if available. iPieta will automatically substitute the alternative language in audio sequences when selections with the requested audio is unavailable.

  • iPieta starts up with the last-viewed table or text:

    • This feature is compatible with iPieta's special navigation
    • To select text in the left 75 pixels (from which special drags or touch behavior is initiated), simply start the copy to the right of the 75 pixels. As you slide your finger to the left, the selection changes so that words in the leftmost 75 pixels can be selected.
    • iPieta's special navigation features are suspended when the Copy menu is displayed; the special navigation features are resumed once the memory has disappeared.
  • The Instant Scroll feature is now option that can be switched on in Settings:
